In Italy, access to the PMA is governed by Law No. 40 of 19 February 2004, which defines its purposes and operating methods. The legislation applies only to adult heterosexual couples, married or stable cohabiting, subject to medical certification of sterility or infertility. To these conditions, a ruling by the Constitutional Court of 2015 has been added, which allowed access to assisted reproduction for fertile couples with communicable genetic diseases. Single parents and homogenitorial couples are excluded according to the current regulatory interpretation
