Useful Information

Cesarean delivery is a surgery that allows the baby to be born through an incision of the abdomen and uterus. It can be scheduled (elective caesarean section) for medical reasons or performed urgently if vaginal delivery presents risks. It is usually performed with spinal or epidural anesthesia, so you can stay awake and welcome the newborn right away. You have the right to receive clear information on the reasons for the C-section and to discuss alternatives, such as VBAC (vaginal delivery after caesarean section), when clinically possible. Recovery takes time, but the skin-to-skin contact and breastfeeding are encouraged as soon as possible. Being informed and participating in the choices is your right: you can talk to your doctor, midwife or gynaecologist to build a plan for conscious delivery.
