After giving birth, there is a small part of the umbilical cord (the stump) that falls spontaneously within 1 or 2 weeks.During this time it is important to keep it clean, dry and free from irritation, without applying alcohol or disinfectants, except on medical advice. How to take care of it- Always wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water before touching the area.- If the stump gets dirty with urine or faeces, clean gently with a sterile gauze soaked in physiological water (not hydrogen peroxide) .- Dry by dabbing without rubbing. - Leave the stump uncovered, folding the edge of the diaper downwards so that it remains in the air.- Avoid covering it with wet or too tight gauze: the air helps natural healing. In the first few days it may appear dark or dry, it is normal. After the fall, a small crust or trace of blood may remain: it resolves spontaneously. If you notice redness, secretions or fever, contact your pediatrician or consultant.Even if the stump has not fallen off yet, you can take a bath: the important thing is to dry it well.
