In the first weeks of life, the newborn does not communicate with words, but with the senses: it hears your voice, recognizes your smell, feels your warmth. Even if the child does not speak yet, he responds to you with his body, looks, sounds and rhythm of breath. The way you look at him, touch him and speak to him is already language.Look into his eyes: eye contact is the first form of mutual recognition. When he observes you, he is learning to read expressions and to feel safe. Talk to him often, even while doing everyday things. There is no need to say complex sentences: your familiar voice calms him down and orients him. Change the tone: alternate low voice, gentle tones, sharper sounds. Babies love the musicality of the human voice. Sing nursery rhymes and lullabies, even during change, baby food or lullaby: rhythm and repetition help him recognize language and feel restrained. Respond to his signals: if he cries, moves or looks for you with his eyes, try to respond calmly, with words and with contact. So he learns that he can trust your presence. All this builds the basis of emotional security and future language development.
