When crying seems inconsolable, the most effective thing is the calm presence of a parent: before even “understanding”, try to reassure him and experiment with solutions that can calm him down. Some practical suggestions- keep him in a band, chest to chest, and go for a walk- talk to him in an affectionate tone of voice - reduce visual, auditory and tactile stimulations in order to offer him a quiet environment.- lull him gently or sing him a calm and repetitive lullaby; - massage him gently- offer him breast or pacifier to self-regulate- hold it belly down on the forearm, always under control
You don't need herbal teas, chamomile, honey or medications: they can be risky for a newborn's health. And remember: never shake it, not even to make it stop: violent shocks can cause serious damage (shaken baby syndrome). Never leave a newborn alone during a crying crisis: he needs to feel contained and reassured. Never raise your voice. If you feel that you can't do it, put it in a safe place (for example, in a crib) and ask for help. If the crying changes or unusual symptoms appear, check with your pediatrician.
